Cake, tadpoles, playing football with the kids, ice cream, sunshine, woodland walks, feeling like “it’s OK” – these are just some of the things that my clients and I chat about during their sessions.
You’ll probably notice that what isn’t in that list are problems – insomnia, anxiety, IBS, anger, depression – because we work together in a solution-focused way. That means acknowledging the problem that has brought you to me, but not looking at it all the time. Instead, we talk about where you want to be in life and how you can take steps towards that.
This might seem easy – and maybe even a bit “fluffy” – but in fact the techniques I use in my sessions are rooted in the latest neuroscientific research, which tells us that when we keep our primitive mind in check and put our intellectual brain in charge we can access the resources that we already have that allow us to respond rather than react, be rational and pragmatic and do the small things that we know will make us feel better when times are tough.
I don’t have the answers and I certainly won’t ever suggest what you can do to feel better, perform better or live better – you know that already and all I do is enable you to access that best part of yourself that is rooting for you and will help you on your own way.
